During the COVID pandemic, when many high schools were closed or teaching remotely, most colleges and universities in the United States waived the requirement that standardized test scores be submitted with applications. The NCAA also suspended their requirement that prospective student-athletes take the SAT or ACT to establish academic eligibility.
The NCAA and about two-thirds of colleges and universities in the United States have extended their waiver through the fall of 2023, making standardized test scores optional for students submitting their applications this fall. Some schools, such as the University of California system, have eliminated test score requirements permanently. Others –such as MIT– have reinstated the requirement and will expect SAT or ACT scores from applicants to the class of 2027.
